Ons Jabeur v Astra Sharma Head to Head

It’s 1-1 from their two meetings and both those matches were played last year. Sharma rallied from a set down to beat Jabeur in the Charleston final, while the Tunisian got her revenge at Roland Garros, winning in straight sets.

Jabeur Sets Sight on Another Impressive Season

A fit-again Ons Jabeur is set to impress once again with her power and guile. The World no. 10 will be playing her first WTA match since withdrawing from her first round contest at the Kremlin Cup with an elbow injury. She recently won the World Tennis Championship exhibition in Abu Dhabi by defeating Belinda Bencic, but tested positive following the event. Having fully recovered now, the Tunisian begins her 2022 campaign in Sydney on Monday.

Jabeur had a sensational 48-19 season in 2021, picking most wins in the WTA along with Annett Kontaveit. The season saw her reach three finals. She finished runner-up in Charleston and the Chicago Fall Classic but captured her maiden title in Birmingham by beating Daria Kasatkina in the final and thus becoming the first Arab woman ever  to win a WTA title.

She also became the first Arab tennis player, male or female, to break into the top 10, reaching a career-high of No. 7 in November.

Some of Jabeur’s other accomplishments last year included a maiden quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon, WTA 1000 semifinal debut at Indian Wells and a last four appearance at the WTA 500 in Charleston.

Sharma Looking for Repeat of Charleston

World No. 98 Astra Sharma didn’t have a great start to the season, falling in the first round of the Melbourne Summer Set-2 to Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson last week.

The 26-year-old, who finished runner-up in Copa Colsanitas in 2019, captured her maiden WTA crown by beating Jabeur in the final of the WTA 250 in Charleston last year. Since then, a run to the quarterfinals in Palermo was her only other notable performance of 2021, as she finished the season with a 12-11 record.

Having broken back into the top 100 last year, the former World No. 85 will be hoping to further improve her rankings.

Although she won’t be a favourite against Jabeur, but having beaten the Tunisian in a crunch final last year, she will fancy her chances against her in the first round.
