Seven finals, four titles, a runner-up finish at the WTA Finals and a top-10 debut, Annett Kontaveit is coming off a dream season, the best of her professional career, and will be looking to build on that as she begins her 2022 campaign in Sydney on Monday.

Currently sitting at a career-high ranking of No. 7, the aggressive baseliner won the Cleveland Open, Ostrava Open, Kremlin Cup and the Transylvania Open titles last year adding to her only WTA title, she won in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2017. She was also the finalist at the Grampians Trophy, but the final against Ann Li got cancelled.

Kontaveit finished runner-up in Eastbourne and at the WTA Finals. She became the first Estonian to qualify for the season-ending tournament, and lost just one match in the group stages to Garbine Muguruza on her way to the final, where she lost to the Spaniard again.

The 26-year-old Estonian accumulated as many as 48 wins in 2021, a joint highest along with Ons Jabeur.

This will be her second main draw appearance in Sydney, following her second round exit from the tournament in 2019 and she will be aiming to pick from where she left last year.

Zhang Lost Opener in Melbourne

She had a terrible start last season, making seven first-round exits before finally getting her first win in May in Strasbourg against Misaki Doi.

The 32-year-old Chinese, however, picked up pace in the second half of the season, finishing runner-up in Nottingham and making the semifinals in Palermo, in addition to a couple of other quarterfinal finishes.

Currently ranked No. 60 in the world, Zhang began her 2022 season at Melbourne Summer Set 1, but couldn’t go beyond the first round, falling to France’s Clara Burel 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

Zhang, who won the U.S. Open doubles title with Samantha Stosur last year, will be playing in Sydney for the second time, having bowed out of the first round in 2017.
