Cori Gauff began her Adelaide International campaign stylishly with a clinical, 6-1, 6-2 win over Katerina Siniakova. Needing just an hour, the American prevailed after winning 80% of the points on the first serve and converting four out of six possible break points. She also won an impressive nine games in a row in the match.
Last week, Gauff played in the WTA 500 version of the same event where she was beaten by Ashleigh Barty in round two. Nonetheless, the 17-year-old has quite a legacy in the city, having reached the semifinal in the 2021 edition – defeating Petra Martic and Shelby Rogers en route.
Over the course of the season, the World No. 19 also reached the latter rounds in big events like WTA Dubai, Charleston Open, Italian Open, French Open, and Canadian Open. With that, Gauff also won her second singles title on the tour – this one in Emilia-Romagna.
At such a young age, Gauff has already established herself as a formidable player and achieved what many pros spend their entire careers seeking. With the top two seeds – Aryna Sabalenk and Elina Svitolina – out of the tournament, her path to the final is effectively open.

Kostyuk Starts Strong too
19-year-old Marta Kostyuk picked up her first win of the 2022 season, defeating Shelby Rogers 6-3, 6-4, an hour and 20 minutes. That match took place on Monday, giving the Ukrainian an important extra day of rest. It also marked a definite improvement from her first-round loss in Melbourne last week to Claire Liu.
Currently ranked World No. 50, Kostyuk had a decent spell in 2021, ending the year on a positive note after starting from #97th spot.
Her highlights include semifinal runs in Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, and Transylvania Open, in addition to a fourth-round stint in the French Open. Although the season wasn’t as glittering as Gauff’s, Kostyuk has shown a great deal of promise already.

Both players share a similar level of experience but Gauff is far more dangerous. She will start as the odds-on favourite but this early in the same, anything can happen. All in all, we are in for a great game of tennis.
