Bencic Makes Winning Return After Covid Recovery

Belinda Bencic admitted she is still fatigued and a little bit wobbly after defeating Beatriz Haddad Maia in her first match of the 2022 season.

Bencic, as you can recall, was among a spate of players who contracted coronavirus whilst playing the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi.

But having made full recovery, the Swiss Olympics gold medalist got her campaign off to a decent start against the Brazilian southpaw. Overall, Bencic’s record against left-handers is something that should not be overlooked. She went 9-2 against that lot in 2021. And following her 6-3 6-2 win over Haddad Maia which took 69 minutes, it extended her winning streak to five matches against left-handed players.

The unseeded Bencic did not face a single break point in the entire match. She also won 83% first-serve points. Those stats are not too shabby for a player who is making her first start of the year after being stricken by Covid-19.

Dodin Outaces Olmos

Oceane Dodin lost to Magdalena Frech in the final round of qualifying on Monday but still received a straight ticket into the main draw as a lucky loser. Following a number of high-profile withdrawals, the Frenchwoman will stay in Sydney at least for a couple more days before traveling to Melbourne.

Dodin won her first-round match against experienced doubles operator Giuliana Olmos. The Mexican Olmos had tallied just two wins in the main draw in singles in the past couple of seasons and did not threaten to add Dodin into the list.

The first set stayed on serve until the ninth game in which Dodin converted her third break point. The World No. 99 would run away with the match from that moment on when she seized control of proceedings.

Olmos would master just one more game as she failed to hold serve for the entire second set. Dodin now seeks to win back-to-back matches for the first time since Palermo last July.
