Olympic Silver Medallist Vondrousova

Vondrousova first gained prominence in 2019 when as a teenager, she made it to the final of the French Open without dropping a set, before Ashleigh Barty proved too strong for her.

Earlier that year she reached the semi-finals in the doubles in Melbourne, but then struggled to replicate that form in the following months.

2021, though, saw something of a revival, beginning with the Australian Open where she reached the fourth round for the first time, before losing to Su-Wei Hseih of Taiwan.

Then in Tokyo, she was a surprise silver medallist at the Olympics, beaten by Belinda Bencic for gold.

Two semi-final appearances in Chicago and Moscow came later in the year.

She began her year in Adelaide, reaching the second round before losing to Ana Konjuh of Croatia, the world number 65, in three sets.

Hon Earns Wildcard After Kvitova Win

Hon was the recipient of the last of the eight wildcards for this year’s Australian Open in the women’s draw,  a few days after pulling off the biggest win of her career by beating Petra Kvitova in Adelaide, the first time she had beaten an opponent ranked in the top twenty.

It is the fourth time that she has taken her place in the main draw in Melbourne, her best result coming in 2020, when she got to the second round before losing to the former champion Angelique Kerber.

More often the 23-year old is found on the ITF tour where she has won four singles and 10 doubles titles, her most recent appearance in a final coming in Nottingham last June, where she was runner-up in the doubles.

Vondrousova v Hon Prediction and Tip

Although Hon will have the benefit of home support, Vondrousova has a good record in Melbourne, and should prove too strong for the local wildcard.
