Simona Halep v Magdalena Frech Head to Head
This will be their second meeting on the WTA Tour. The pair last met in the 2020 WTA Prague where Halep routed Frech with 6-2, 6-0.

After spending the better part of the last season battling with injuries and the consequent loss in form, Simona Halep is finally getting back to her usual self.
The current World No. 15 showed signs of resurgence towards the end of the year with a runner-up feat in Cluj-Napoca and a semifinal run in Linz. This season, she started off in Melbourne Summer Set 1 and moved on to win the title.
In that tournament, the Romanian played with remarkable efficiency as she made quick work of her opponents. In the final, she dismantled Veronika Kudermetova 6-2, 6-3.
Looking at Halep’s form in the Australian Open, she has always enjoyed a good run here. A runner-up in 2018, semifinal in 2020, and quarterfinal last year – the 30-year-old will fancy her chances of delivering another great performance. However, her 14th seeding has placed her in the same bracket as Emma Raducanu and Garbine Mugurza. If she overcomes that, she will likely play Anett Kontaveit as early as the quarters.
But this comes later. For now, Halep has a match to win and given her opponent, she should be able to do so with ease.

Frech, Yet to Win a Main Draw Match
World No. 102 Magdalena Frech is yet to win a main draw bout in 2022 and by the looks of Halep, it is highly unlikely for it to happen here in Melbourne.
The 24-year-old last played in Sydney where she won the qualifiers but lost to Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the opener. Frech incurred a similar fate in Melbourne as well, losing to Viktoria Kuzmova in the qualifiers.
The Pole had a rather uneventful time on the tour in 2021, having spent most of it on the ITF and Challenger circuits. She won a title in each but hasn’t done a whole lot in replicating that success in bigger events. In Grand Slams, Frech’s best run came in the French Open in 2018 when she reached the second round.

This one should go to Halep, no doubt. She is back in form and is playing the kind of tennis that kept her in the top five for several seasons.
