This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Chance for Muguruza to Become No. 1 Again

Garbine Muguruza is just two steps shy of becoming the World No. 1 and this is something that can change over the next two weeks.  She is in a good form and is starting to become a better version of what she was a few seasons ago.

Granted that she did not have the best of the starts to the season (a quarterfinal loss to Daria Kasatkina in Sydney), the two-time Grand Slam champion has the cause to be optimistic. Muguruza won the year-end WTA Finals and with that, capped off a pretty impressive 2021 tour.

Plus, the 28-year-old has got a decent track record in Melbourne; she was a runner-up in 2020. In this year’s draw, her earliest challenge should come in the fourth round against Simona Halep, followed by a potential clash with Anett Kontaveit.

That said, upsets are known to happen early on and Muguruza can benefit from some caution.

Burel Hopeful of a Personal Best in Melbourne

This is the third time that the 20-year-old Clara Burel is set to play in the Australian Open and so far, she is yet to win a first-round match.

Like her opponent, the World No. 77 hasn’t had the most perfect start to the year either – she lost to the veteran German Andrea Petkovic in the second round of Melbourne 1. She did, however, gave the 34-year-old a good run for her money by fighting to three sets.

Last season, Burel enjoyed a good run with five ITF Tour finals (win in two) and her maiden WTA final at the Swiss Open. On the whole, she jumped up some 150 ranking spots to reach the top 80. Clearly, the growth has been exponential and Burel is as prepared as she can be for a good run in 2022.

Muguruza v Burel Prediction and Tip

Muguruza should win this one but it may not be easy. Expect an entertaining game of tennis where Burel may just give the Spaniard a run for her money.
