This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Pavlyuchenkova Looking for a Good Start

30-year-old Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is set to play in her first tournament of 2022 – which, some would agree, is a risky move. The Russian hasn’t played a professional match since the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in November, where she helped her nation retain their title.

Even though she is experienced and well-skilled, opening-round matches in a major are always tricky and high-pressure, especially when your opponent is coming off a good run. And Bondar is doing just that, at least by her standards for now.

Nonetheless, Pavlyuchenkova is building on a decent 2021 tour (29-20) where she was the French Open finalist and also won an Olympic Gold in doubles. She ended the year as World No. 11 – her career-best.

Moreover, 90% of her last several defeats on the tour have come at the hands of a top 50 player only. Will this time be an exception?

Bondar Likely to Put up a Fight

Around the same time last year, Anna Bondar was ranked #275 on the tour – now, she is the World No. 92. This meteoric rise came on the back of four ITF Tour finals – two of which she won and a Challenger title in November.

She looks certainly ready to transition into the more competitive environment of the WTA Tour. In all fairness, she is off to a good start. This month, the 24-year-old Hungarian featured in Melbourne 1 where she reached the second round as a qualifier, defeating Katerina Siniakova in the opener.

All in all, Bondar has momentum and if she gets off to a strong, commanding start with not a lot of errors, she may just put her Russian adversary on the backfoot.

Pavlyuchenkova v Bondar Prediction and Tip

Pavlyuchenkova will start as the odds-on favourite but this match can very well go either way. It has all the makings of being an upset for the No. 10 seed.
