Naomi Osaka v Madison Brengle Head to Head

This will be their first meeting since an ITF event back in 2013. Brengle won that one 6-2, 6-2 but since then, it’s clearly Osaka who has come much ahead.

Osaka Off to a Rusty Start

Two-time Australian Open winner Naomi Osaka kicked off her bid for a third title with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Camila Osorio. The former world number one needed just an hour and 10 minutes to brush aside the Colombian.

However, the match may not have been that easy for the Japanese had it been a stronger opponent. Even though it was an easy win, Osaka committed 28 unforced errors – 13 more than her adversary. She made up for it with thrice as many winners and a strong service game (83% first serve win rate).

The number 13 seed will need to up her game a bit as Brengle may not prove to be that forgiving. Osaka will still head into this match as a heavy favourite owing to her overall form and a superior pedigree. Last season, the 24-year-old took some time off the tour to focus on her mental health and by the looks of it, she is in a much better place.

Osaka started the year in Melbourne 1 where she reached the semifinals before withdrawing from that game due to fatigue. Nonetheless, a week’s time to strategise and practice should do well for her.

Brengle Survives Yastremska

Madison Brengle had a wild opener in Melbourne as she battled Dayana Yastremska for three sets. It was a game that was heavily dominated by the American barring a momentary relapse. She ultimately took the match 6-1, 0-6, 5-0 with the Ukrainian retiring in the final set.

On the flip side, she committed only 12 unforced errors while Yastremska was at an astonishing 60. Brengle’s first service wasn’t that great either, winning just 56% of the points there.

As for her recent form, the 31-year-old will be pleased with the way her season has started. A second-round exit in Melbourne was followed by a quarterfinal run in Adelaide where she withdrew from her match against Alison Riske.

Now, Brengle may not be as great of a player as Osaka but she has made good strides over the last few seasons. It seems to be a matter of time before she finally carves big wins consistently.

Osaka v Brengle Prediction and Tip

Another match where Osaka should win but she will be tested. It wouldn’t be surprising if this goes into three sets.
