Rafael Nadal v Yannick Hanfmann Head to Head

Their only previous outing had come at the 2019 French Open where Nadal had routed Hanfmann in straight sets to make it to round two.

Nadal Clinical in Opener

There were the odd signs of rustiness in his first round win but in the end, Nadal won it in straight sets to seal his berth in the round of 64.

Taking on Marcos Giron in his opener, Nadal was off to a quick start before settling in for a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 victory in an hour and 51 minutes.

Nadal, who had won the title at the Melbourne Summer Set 1 without dropping a set in the opening week of the season, wasted no time in breaking his opponent in the opening set before finding himself an early break in the second.

Two breaks of serves in the third were enough to seal the deal for the Spaniard, who faced just two break-points in the entire match and saved both of them.

Winning 84% of his own first serve points and 47% on his opponent’s first serve would have helped Nadal come away with a lot more confidence for the rest of the season.

Qualifier Hanfmann Stuns Kokkinakis

Thanasi Kokkinakis was a 3/10 favourite to win his opener but instead, it was Hanfmann who ran away with the victory – what made it a bigger shock was it turned out to be a straight-set walloping for the Aussie.

Hanfmann, who had made it through the qualifiers with wins over Jason Jung, Tim Van Rijthoven and Alessandro Giannessi, carved out a 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 win to seal his place against Nadal.

On court for two hours and eight minutes, Hanfmann was aided in no small way by Kokkinakis’ unforced errors – 42 of them – while he managed to save all eight of the break-points he faced. In turn he broke Thannasi five times.

And while Nadal will be a different cup of tea, an opening win here would have given Hanfmann that belief he belongs to the top 100 that he once was a part of. A fighting performance against the Spaniard could reinforce that belief further.

Nadal v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

Fight or no fight, it’s tough to see Nadal not take this in straight sets.
