Jannik Sinner v Steve Johnson Head to Head

Jannik Sinner brings a commanding 2-0 head-to-head lead over Johnson. He beat the American on home soil in Rome three years ago, and most recently at the Citi Open last season en route to the title.

Sinner Routs Sousa in Opener

Jannik Sinner recorded a straight-sets win in his opening match at this year’s Australian Open. He toppled Portugal’s Joao Sousa 6-4 7-5 6-1 in a little over two hours.

The match itself wasn’t as straightforward as the scoreline suggested. Sinner confessed to having difficulties adjusting to the windy conditions. And given that Sousa had already acclimatized with the courts after playing three qualifying matches, he was bound to exhibit some resistance.

The first two sets were tight, as Sinner struggled to hold onto his lead. Each time he broke, the Portuguese qualifier broke back as he eyed an upset. But once the Italian power-hitter polished up his game at the start of the third set, he used his fresh legs to outmaneuver the 32-year-old.

Victory over Sousa was just his second main draw win at the Australian Open. He is yet to advance past the second round on these parts.

Johnson Silences Thompson And Australian Crowd

Steve Johnson had one foot out of the tournament but remarkably staged a very late fightback to remain at the Australian Open.

The American World No. 104 won a dramatic five-setter 7-6 6-7 4-6 6-3 6-3 in three hours and 44 minutes. Johnson had fallen two-sets-to-one but hauled himself back. And he repeated the trick in the fifth set when he trailed 1-3 before winning the next five games on the trot.

Johnson was broken just three times in the entire match as he won 80% first-serve points. He improves to 3-2 for the year but it is hard to see him adding another win on Thursday.

His record at the Australian Open leaves a lot to be desired. He has only made the third round on two occasions in his last eight visits.

Sinner v Johnson Prediction and Tip

Sinner got a huge break with the draw throwing up two very winnable opening matches early doors. As he eases his way into the tournament, the Italian will eventually be tough to beat in the later rounds.
