Paula Badosa v Marta Kostyuk Head to Head

Badosa and Kostyuk have history. The pair of them played each other in the final round of qualifying for the 2019 Australian Open in which the Spaniard emerged victorious in straight sets.

Badosa Storms Past Trevisan

At this time last year, Paula Badosa was ranked outside the Top 70. She had lost the first round of the Australian Open to Ludmilla Samsonova in three sets, but she never stopped believing in her abilities.

Fast forward to 2022, talks of Badosa winning the Australian Open are gathering by pace. Odds for an outright winner are plummeting by the minute, and for a player who had only won 18 tour-level matches before 2021, this represents one heck of a transformation.

Badosa picked up her 50th match win since the start of last season after outclassing Martina Trevisan on Wednesday to reach the third round of the Australian Open for the first time. She improves to 7-1 for the year – her only stain of what has been a sensational start to the season remains that opening-round defeat to Victoria Azarenka in Adelaide.

Against Italy’s Trevisan, Badosa affirmed her superiority right from the off. She served her second 6-0 set of the tournament after also storming past Ajla Tomljanovic in her opener with a bagel set.

Badosa won 80% first-serve points and did not face a single break point in the match.

Kostyuk Looks To Repeat 2018 Heroics

It is hard to forget that Marta Kostyuk famously reached the third round of this very tournament at only 15 back in 2018. She was touted as tennis’ next-generation superstar. But her career has kept simmering without boiling.

The Ukrainian, now 19, looks ready to break new ground. Kostyuk did not have an ideal start to the year, losing a huge chunk of ranking points earned during the first tournament of last season and falling down almost 15 spots in the WTA rankings after a slow start.

But she comes off a decent run of back-to-back wins in the main draw of the Australian Open. First, she defeated fellow teen Diane Parry and then secured a major scalp in beating the number 32 seed Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Kostyuk was always going to have the advantage in the match-up against the counter-punching Spaniard. She was aggressive from the baseline and nullified her unforced error count of 42 with 33 winners.

Badosa v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip

This will be a stern test for Badosa’s Australian Open title bid. Kostyuk is a player who can be erratic at times but she has got variation in her game. She likes to charge of rallies and will rarely play a similar shot in succession. We reckon the Ukrainian will extend Badosa, but nonetheless, the Spaniard should survive.
