Sakkari Sends Kudermetova Packing

Maria Sakkari eased past No. 28 seed Veronika Kudermetova of Russia to reach the fourth round in Melbourne for the second time in her career.

Two years ago, she made her last 16 debut at a major at the Australian Open, but couldn’t go beyond that round. This year, the two-time Grand Slam semifinalist will be hoping to better her best showing in Melbourne, having already matched that feat on Friday.

Sakkari, who hasn’t dropped a set this week, needed an hour and 22 minutes to dispatch the Russian 6-4, 6-1 on Friday.

Ranked No. 8 in the world, the Greek had a difficult start with the Russian getting the first break of the match and taking a 1-3 lead in the first set. But the 26-year-old Greek was quick to respond, getting the break back immediately and then going up by another break before sealing the set.

It was all Sakkari in the second set, who dropped just two points on her serve and won 15 of 25 return points to take the contest.

Sakkari, who was 38-20 last year, had begun her Melbourne campaign with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) win over Germany’s Tatjana Maria in the first round. She rolled past China’s Qinwen Zheng 6-1, 6-4 in the second round.

Pegula Impresses in Australia Again

Jessica Pegula reached her first and only major quarterfinal at the Australian Open last year. The American is one win away from repeating the achievement this year.

The 21st seed continued to impress in Melbourne as she knocked out Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win in the third round on Friday. Pegula struck seven aces, broke her opponent’s serve four times in the match and saved five of seven break points to clinch the victory in an hour and 31 minutes.

The 27-year-old, ranked No. 21 in the world, is coming off a great 2021 season, when she finished with a 36-19 record.

She had a tough start at the Australian Open, needing to fight back from a set down to beat Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 in a close to three-hour contest.

Pegula put up a much-improved performance against compatriot Bernarda Pera in the second round, winning the contest 6-4, 6-4.

On Friday, against Parrizas-Diaz, the first set was an evenly matched contest with both players breaking each other twice in the first and taking the set to the tiebreak. The American dominated the tiebreak and the outplayed the Spaniard in the second set to march into the Round of 16.

Sakkari v Pegula Prediction and Tip

The last time they met, the match turned out to be an edge-of-the-seat thriller. Expect another dramatic contest, but Sakkari will once again hold a slight edge.
