Matteo Berrettini v Pablo Carreno-Busta Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 25 year old Italian, and the Spaniard, who is five years older.

Berrettini Taken to the Brink by Teenager

Berrettini has not had an easy passage to the fourth round, first having to come from a set down to beat Brandon Nakashima and then dropping another set to fellow American Stefan Kuzlov in his second round match.

These were just hors d’oeuvres though to the problems posed by the world number 31, Carlos Alcaraz, the 18-year-old Spanish teenager, tipped by many as a future Grand Slam champion, in their match on Friday.

Berrettini began well enough. Having saved five break points against his own serve he then broke Alcaraz in successive games and claimed the first set.

A break at the start of the second set appeared to put him in control, but the Spaniard hit back to level, and it went to a  tie-break. However, Berrettini proved the stronger, and he converted his third set point.

The momentum of the match, though, changed in the third set which went with serve until Alcaraz forced the only break to halve the deficit.

And when he broke Berrettini twice more in the fourth set, the match was level and it looked like the teenager was favourite to win.

The fifth set saw both men force break points and Berrettini had a match point saved.

In the end it came down to a tie-break, where the Italian used all the experience he has gained from being a Grand Slam finalist, holding his nerve as finally Alcaraz wilted under the pressure.

After more than four hours on court, Berrettini made his second match point count.

Carreno-Busta’s Third Fourth Round Appearance

Berrettini’s opponent on Sunday will be another Spaniard, Pablo Carreno-Busta, who has made the fourth round in Melbourne for the third time in his career.

He began his latest campaign with a straight sets victory over the Argentine qualifier, Tomas Martin Etchverry, but then had to survive a five set battle of his own, against the Dutch world number 62, Tallon Griekspor, twice leading by a set only to be pegged back on each occasion, before finally prevailing.

That earned him a third round tie with the NextGen finalist Sebastian Korda of the USA, the world number 43 on Friday.

The first set went with serve until the eighth game when Korda was broken. Pablo Carreno-Busta served for the set only to see six set points saved and Korda was able to break back. However, two more set points followed in the next game and finally Carreno-Busta had his nose in front.

Break points came and went on both sides oi the net in the second set, but serving to stay in it, Korda was broken, and the Spaniard extended his lead.

Again, both men had break opportunities in the third set but, this time, when none were taken, it went to a tie-break which the American won.

The pair swapped breaks at the start of the fourth set, but then Korda dropped his serve once more, and there was no way back for the American after that. Serving to stay in the match, he dropped his serve for the final time.

Berrettini v Carreno-Busta Prediction and Tip

Berrettini had to dig very deep to beat Alcaraz, but, having done so, he will be hoping that he can see off the challenge of another Spaniard.
