Radu Albot of Moldova arrived in Pune following a third-round appearance in the Australian Open.
The 32-year-old started as a qualifier in Melbourne and navigated his three qualifying fixtures with ease. In the main draw, he first defeated Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 followed by a straight-set win over Aleksander Vukic in the second round.
In the third round, however, he succumbed to the number three seed Alexander Zverev in straight sets. Nonetheless, it was a positive result for Albot who made it this far in the Slam for the second consecutive edition.
The current World No. 124 – who is set to move up in the rankings on Monday following his fortnight in Melbourne – also made up for his disastrous start to the 2022 season. Albot featured in Adelaide 1 where he lost in the qualifiers to Egor Gerasimov.
The Moldovan hasn’t won a singles title since February 2019. Moreover, at the Maharashtra Open, he has never made it beyond the first round in his last four appearances. However, his last stint here was in 2018 and since then, Albot has come a long way – at least enough to reach the second round.

Gaio, Seeking Reprieve in Pune
Italy’s Federico Gaio is hunting his first win of the new season. His efforts so far have been in vain although, he has participated only in the Australian Open. Over there, he succumbed to Tobias Kamke in the first qualifying match in straight sets.
Currently ranked #159, Gaio has never been the one to create ripples on the ATP Tour. The 29-year-old spent a majority of his last season on the Challenger circuit with a handful of appearances in the bigger events. The sole highlight of his season came in the Todi Challenger where he was a finalist.
In ATP events, the best Gaio has managed is reaching the second round in the Barcelona Open as a qualifier. Even in the Grand Slams, he never made it past the qualifiers.

Albot will begin as the heavy favourite. He has momentum and experience on his side and is coming with some wind in his sails. Expect him to win this one comfortably.
