Gerasimov Enjoying a Good Start to 2022

Egor Gerasimov will fancy his chances of delivering a good run in the Maharashtra Open. After all, he is coming off a rather decent spell in Australia – at least by his standards.

The Belarusian started his season in Adelaide 1 where he reached the quarterfinal as a qualifier, defeating the likes of Radu Albot, Marton Fucsovics, and Gianluca Mager before ultimately succumbing to Karen Khachanov.

He played in the same tournament again the following week, dubbed Adelaide 2, where he lost in the opening round to Mager after clearing the qualifiers. In the Australian Open, however, Gerasimov had the misfortune of running into the number 10 seed Hubert Hurkacz in round one and ultimately lost in four sets.

The 29-year-old has also got a decent track record in Pune. In his last appearance here in 2020, Gerasimov reached the final – his first such feat on the ATP Tour – before losing to Jiri Vesely. Overall, consistency hasn’t really been his strong suit so in all fairness, it will be tricky for him to deliver the same run again.

Young Ruusuvuori Bubbling with Confidence

22-year-old Emil Ruusuvuori arrived in Pune following a first-round exit in the Australian Open at the hands of Felix Auger-Aliassime in five sets. Nonetheless, the fact that he managed to make the ninth-seeded Canadian work for his win tells us that he is a talented player capable of great things.

Before that, the young Finnish played in ATP Melbourne where he was a semifinalist. He fell to Rafael Nadal 4-6, 5-7 in a well-fought affair.

Although Ruusuvouri didn’t quite win a title last season, he did deliver a handful of promising runs. The World No. 90 reached the second round in ATP Dubai, fourth-round in the Miami Masters (defeating Alexander Zverev en route), and semifinals in the Atlanta Open and ATP Winston-Salem.

These results are in many ways quite superior to how Gerasimov fared in 2021.

Ruusuvuori v Gerasimov Prediction and Tip

Gerasimov has experience on his side while Ruusuvuori, as young fresh blood, is hungry for wins and determined to make a name for himself. The youngster has also beaten a handful of top 10 players in his time, which makes him a formidable opponent in Pune.

In all fairness, this match can go either way with Gerasimov pegged as the underdog here. However, we can expect this to be a slogfest.
