Tsonga Returns After Dismal Season

After having played just two matches and lost both of them in 2020, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga returned to tennis in Montpellier in 2021. But for the first time he suffered a first-round defeat in what has otherwise been a successful tournament for the Frenchman. A straight sets defeat to Sebastian Korda began his dismal run in 2021, which saw him just one of his nine matches in the season.

The former Australian Open finalist’s last action in 2021 was a five-set defeat to Sweden’s Mikael Ymer in Wimbledon. Since then he has been out due to an injury but returned at a Challenger in Quimper  last week, winning his opening round match against Switzerland’s Marc-Andrea Huesler in straight sets but losing a three-setter to fellow countryman Alexandre Müller in the Round of 16.

An 18-time champion on the tour, Tsonga won the title in Montpellier in 2019, by beating compatriot Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the title clash. The 36-year-old has an 11-4 record in the tournament, having also reached the semifinals in 2010, 2017 and 2018.

Currently ranked 259th in the world, Tsonga will be looking to end a seven-match losing streak on the tour and win his first tour-level match since March last year.

Zuk Comes Through the Qualifiers

World No. 179 Kacper Zuk qualified for the main draw with a tough three-set win over Russia’s Roman Safiullin in the second qualifying round on Monday.

In a two-hour-and-11-minute contest the Pole ousted the Russian Zuk wins the match 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5.

This was the second consecutive three-set victory for the 23-year-old Zuk, who defeated  World No. 86 Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 in the first qualifying round.

Zuk, who lost to Liam Broady in the first qualifying round at the Australian Open this year, has featured in two Challenger tournaments this year, falling in the first round in Forli and in the second round in Quimper.

The 23-year-old who has produced better results on hard courts than on clay, has a 3-3 career record at the tour level.

Tsonga v Zuk Prediction and Tip

Tsonga will be desperate to end his run of losses. But given that Zuk’s better prepared for the contest and has just beaten a top 100 player in the qualifiers will give him a lot of confidence going into this one. Expect a good contest with Zuk edging past the experienced pro.
