Musetti Looking for a Change of Fortune

2021 was a year of two halves for the Italian teenager Musetti

In the first six months he finished runner-up in two Challenger events, and then, switching to the main tour, reached the semi-finals in Acapulco and Lyon, and almost upset Novak Djokovic at the French Open.

However, after taking time away from the game to finish his studies and to deal with some off the court issues, he began to struggle. Although what he had achieved earlier in the year was still enough for him to qualify for the NextGen ATP Finals, he failed to shine in front of his home crowd in Milan.

Nor has 2022 begun any better. In his first match of the year, he was beaten in the opening round in Adelaide by Taro Daniel of Japan.

And then he suffered the same fate at the Australian Open, although he did at least take a set off the local man Alex de Minaur.

No Need for a Wildcard for Vukic in Pune

Vukic ended 2021 on a career high ranking after reaching two Challenger finals in November in the USA, although he lost both of them.

Then he was granted a series of wildcards into tournaments during the Australian season.

He was beaten by Steve Johnson of Australia in Adelaide at the first time of asking, but, in the second tournament held there, he did much better.

First he beat Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan and then got his revenge on Johnson, before losing in the quarter-final to compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis, who has just won the doubles title at the Australian Open with Nick Kyrgios.

Vukic’s own campaign in Melbourne in the singles saw him beat Lloyd Harris of South Africa in the first round before he lost to Radu Albot of Moldova in straight sets.

He did not need a wildcard to make the main draw in Pune though, instead coming from behind to beat Hugo Grenier of France, the world number 158, in three sets.

Musetti v Vukic Prediction and Tip

Despite the disparity in their world rankings, Vukic is in reasonable form and the Italian teenager is not. That gives the Australian the edge.
