Gianluca Mager v Joao Sousa Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 27-year old Italian, and the Portuguese, who is five years older.

Mager Enjoys First Round Bye

Mager was given a bye in the first round in Pune courtesy of his seeding, a reflection in itself of the fact that he finished 2021 at a career high world ranking.

Like most players on tour, he began his year in Australia, in his case in Adelaide where, in the first tournament to be held there, he beat Fernando Cerundulo of Argentina, before losing to Egor Gerasimov of Belarus.

The next week in Adelaide he was able to gain swift revenge on Gerasimov for that defeat, before suffering another second round loss, this time to the Russian Karen Khachanov.

His Australian Open campaign did not go so well though – he was beaten by the Russian Andrey Rublev, the world number seven, in straight sets in the first round.

Portuguese Number One Struggles Through First Round

Sousa, once ranked as high as thirty in the world, arrived in India in the middle of a sustained run of poor form, having lost his last ten matches in the main draw of senior ATP events.

And, when he went a set down to Arjun Kadhe of India, a man ranked 778 in the world and who was playing his first singles match of 2022, he must have feared that run was set to continue.

But he fought his way back into the match, taking the second set on a tie-break, and then proving too strong for his opponent in the third.

He now has the chance to make his first quarter-final appearance in a senior tour event since Chengdu in 2019.

Mager v Sousa Prediction and Tip

Sousa may have ended his long losing streak in Pune, but that does not mean he will have enough in the tank to beat the Italian seed.
