Ramos-Vinolas Back in Cordoba Finals

World No. 44 Albert Ramos-Vinolas returned to the final of the Cordoba Open with a straight sets win over Argentinian wild card Juan Ignacio Londero in the semifinals on Saturday.

This is the second consecutive year when the Spaniard has reached the final in Cordoba. Last year, he was stunned by qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo, who won the title on his ATP main draw debut.

Will it be second time lucky for Ramos-Vinolas? While he will be the favourite to win on Sunday, he faces another exciting qualifier who has turned heads this week with his stunning performance and his ability to punch above his weight. So, once again, the 34-year-old Spaniard will have his task cut out in Cordoba.

His route to the finals has been a bit easier this year than in 2021. Last year, he had to play out three sets in all his matches. While he triumphed in four of them, he couldn’t match-up to the 19-year-old in the final.

This year, Ramos Vinolas is yet to drop a set in the tournament. He defeated Slovakia’s Andrej Martin 6-4, 6-3 in the first round and was leading Juan Pablo Varillas 6-4, 2-3 when the Peruvian retired in the Round of 16.

In the quarterfinals, Ramos-Vinolas knocked out the fourth seed Lorenzo Sonego of Italy 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.

On Saturday, against Londero, there was little to choose between the two players in the first set, with both serving well. It was in the tiebreak when Ramos-Vinolas edged ahead to take a one-set- to-love lead. In the second set, the Spaniard was the first to break in the eighth game, but Londero responded immediately, breaking his opponent’s serve to love to make it 4-5 and send the set back on serve. However, Ramos-Vinolas broke again in the next game, converting a third match point for a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory in an hour and 48 minutes.

Tabilo Topples the Top Seed

Alejandro Tabilo’s fairy tale run in Cordoba continued as the Chilean qualifier upset top seed Diego Schwartzman to reach a maiden ATP final.

Tabilo converted all four of his break points and saved 8 of 11 to knock out the World No. 14, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) in an hour and 58 minutes.

Ranked no. 144th in the world, the 24-year-old had won just five tour-level matches before the tournament and had never won consecutive main draw matches. However, all that changed this week, as he marched into the final with six consecutive wins (including two qualifiers). What’s more, he hasn’t dropped a set in the tournament.

Tabilo, who has beaten five Argentines this week, qualified for the main draw by knocking out local players Renzo Olivo and Thiago Agustin Tirante. The Toronto-born lefty carried the qualifying round form into the main draw as he eliminated Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 6-1 in the first round.

Tabilo faced his only non-Argentine opponent in Carlos Taberner in the second round, when he defeated the Spaniard 6-2, 6-4. Tabilo delivered one of his best performances against Sebastian Baez in the quarterfinals, defeating the 21-year-old 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) and then raised his level in the semifinals to get the biggest win of his career.

Ramos-Vinolas v Tabilo Prediction and Tip

Ramos-Vinolas will be the favourite but such has been Tabilo’s form this week that the Spaniard won’t take it easy. Expect a tough contest, with Ramos-Vinolas winning the title this year.
