Jelena Ostapenko v Xinyu Wang Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Ostapenko Hopeful of a Good Run

World No. 25 Jelena Ostapenko has so far reached the third round in the Australian Open and lost in the opening match of the Sydney Classic. Both those defeats came at the hands of the top 10 players like Barbora Krejcikova and Paula Badosa.

Had the Latvian not met these players so early, one could imagine she could have gone a tad bit further.

Last season was among her better spells on the tour since winning the French Open in 2017. Ostapenko won the Eastbourne International title and was a runner-up in the Luxembourg Open. She was also a semifinalist at the Indian Wells Open and a quarterfinalist in the Italian Open.

On the doubles circuit, she won the Kremlin Cup with Katerina Siniakova. Clearly, the 24-year-old is well-equipped to handle the rather lower-ranked players and will fancy her chances against Wang.

Wang, Current World No. 86

Around the same time last season, 20-year-old Xinyu Wang was ranking in the late 150s. Now, she is a part of the top 100 with sights on more glory.

Although she has had a bleak start to the season – a second-round defeat to Aryna Sabalenka in Aus Open and a first-round loss to Aliaksandra Sasnovich, the Chinese has the potential to go big.

Last season, she reached the quarterfinal in Linz and Courmayeur, and the semifinal in Prague. In lower circuits, Wang was a runner-up in the Columbus Challenger and ITF Charlottesville.

This year, she is likely to keep the same tempo going and play more on the WTA circuit. That said, she is still inexperienced when compared to Ostapenko and will need to bring her A game.

Ostapenko v Wang Prediction and Tip

Ostapenko will begin as the odds-on favourite but Wang is well-positioned to give her adversary a run for her money. The Latvian should come out on the top but it may not be an easy win for her.

Tip: Ostapenko to win and over 19.5 games: 7/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
