Maria Sakkari v Anastasia Potapova Head to Head

The head to head tally between the two players stands at 1-1. Sakkari got the last laugh, beating the Russian in the 2021 WTA Abu Dhabi.

Sakkari Seeking a Good Run

World No. 8 Maria Sakkari is starting as the top seed in the WTA St. Petersburg Open. So far this season, she is 4-2 – not the best of the starts to the season but not the worst either.

Last month, the Greek featured in the Adelaide 1 and Australian Open where she lost respectively in the second round and fourth round. In both those cases, she fell to American players – Shelby Rogers and Melbourne Slam quarterfinalist Jessica Pegula.

Of course, these results are nothing but a small blip in what has been a largely positive spell for Sakkari over the last season. The 26-year-old, under the tutelage of Tom Hill, ascended into the top 10 after reaching the semifinal in the French Open, US Open, WTA Finals, and Miami Open in 2021.

Sakkari was also the runner-up at the Ostrava Open and all in all, she ended the year with an impressive tally of 38-20.

Potapova Hoping to Tap into Home Advantage

20-year-old Anastasia Potapova is coming off a rather bleak run on the WTA Tour, at least on the singles circuit.

In the Adelaide 2 and Australian Open, she fell in the first round – respectively to Madison Brengle and Camila Giorgi. However, the Russian did reach the quarterfinal in Melbourne Set 2 where she ultimately lose to Veronika Kudermetova.

On the doubles circuit, the current World No. 77 has had a fairly better time. Most recently, she was a quarterfinalist with Rebecca Peterson in the Aus Open.

Looking at her overall form, Potapova has been among those players who lose early in the tournaments. Such has been the case for most of the 2021 season, barring her stint in WTA Dubai where she reached the quarters after stunning Madison Keys and Belinda Bencic.

That said, the point remains that she lacks consistency and possibly, experience.

Sakkari v Potapova Prediction and Tip

Sakkari is, by far, the superior player here. She has an enviable pedigree, is in a decent form, is known to reach the latter rounds consistently. She should do well to move past Potapova with ease.

Tip: Sakkari to win in straight sets: 4/9 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
