Anett Kontaveit v Jil Teichmann Head to Head

Kontaveit holds a 2-0 lead over the Swiss, last beating her in the 2021 US Open with 6-4, 6-1.

Kontaveit Looking to Dominate Again

Last year, Anett Kontaveit enjoyed the best spell of her season. She ended the year with 48-17 and a place in the top 10.

Currently ranked World No. 9, the Estonian reached seven finals – going the distance in four of them. She was also a runner-up in the year-end WTA Finals where she lost to Garbine Muguruza. Admittedly, a great part of this scintillating run came after she hired the services of Dmitry Tursunov (ex-coach of Aryna Sabalenka) to be her sparring partner.

The 26-year-old also had a good start to the ongoing season as she reached the semifinal in the Sydney Classic. In the Australian Open, however, she was stunned in the second round by the rising Danish prodigy Clara Tauson in straight sets.

That defeat marked one of the rare instances where Kontaveit succumbed to a player who is ranked outside the top 30. That may have left her a bit vulnerable but there is no reason why she can’t find her groove in St. Petersburg.

Teichmann, Seeking Reprieve

Jil Teichmann is the current World No. 31 – her career-best singles ranking. Even though she hasn’t had the best of the starts to the season, the Swiss has cause to be optimistic.

So far, she is 1-2 and has lost in the first round of Adelaide 2 and the second round in the Australian Open. Those defeats came at the hands of Lauren Davis and Victoria Azarenka respectively.

Last season, however, the 24-year-old made respectable strides on the circuit by reaching the final of the Cincinnati Masters, losing ultimately to Ashleigh Barty. In that tournament, Teichmann stunned the likes of Naomi Osaka, Belinda Bencic, and Karolina Pliskova. Her other highlights include reaching the semifinal in WTA Dubai and Adelaide International.

Clearly, Teichmann is capable of punching well above her weight but what she lacks is consistency. Her recent form isn’t that great and upsetting Kontaveit may prove to be a big challenge.

Kontaveit v Teichmann Prediction and Tip

Kontaveit will start as the odds-on favourite but a brief moment of vulnerability gives Teichmann an opening to do the impossible. This should be an entertaining game of tennis where the Estonian, all things considered, should come out on the top.
