Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova v Jaqueline Cristian Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two ladies on the WTA Tour.

Pavlyuchenkova Hoping to Rediscover her Form

World No. 14 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova arrived in St. Petersburg following a third-round exit in the Australian Open at the hands of Sorana Cirstea. That was the first tournament the Russian played this season and possibly, the lack of practice or momentum may have led to her early loss.

Nonetheless, the number four seed is a formidable player and will fancy her chances of a good run at home. Interestingly, she has never made it past the quarterfinal in this tournament while last season, she fell to Anastasia Gasanova in the second round.

Last season, the 30-year-old was the runner-up in the French Open and a quarterfinalist at the Tokyo Olympics. She also helped Russia win the Billie Jean King Cup and made it as far as the fourth-round in the US Open.

That said, she is not entirely immune to losing to lower-ranked players. Such has been the case many times in the past, giving Cristian an opening to work with.

Cristian, Working Hard

23-year-old Jaqueline Cristian ended the 2021 WTA Tour as World No. 71 – an improvement of some 90 odd places year-on-year.

Her highlights entail reaching the final of the Andrézieux-Bouthéon Challenger and WTA Linz (as a runner-up), in addition to a quarterfinal run in Palermo and a semifinal appearance in the Astana Open.

So far this season, the Romanian has played in three tournaments – Melbourne 1, Sydney, and Australian Open – but lost to rather formidable players like Kaia Kanepi, Barbora Krejcikova, and Madison Keys. One might wonder how she would have fared had she not met these big guns so early in the competitions. However, she did put up a fight with Keys and Krejcikova, ultimately losing by 2-6, 5-7, and 1-6, 5-7.

Cristian may still lack the kind of experience that Pavlyuchenkova has but given the form of her opponent, she will be hopeful of a good result.

Pavlyuchenkova v Cristian Prediction and Tip

On paper, Pavlyuchenkova should win this one but given her shaky run of late, Cristian is well-positioned to make things difficult for her. It wouldn’t be a surprise if this goes to three sets.
