Andrey Rublev has won eight career titles, but he hasn’t been able to defend any of those titles. That scenario could change this weekend should the Russian go all the way to the Rotterdam Open.
Rublev won the last staging of this tournament in 2021, beating the likes of Andy Murray, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Marton Fucsovics. That was the last trophy that grazed his trophy cabinet, although he was part of the Russian team that won the Davis Cup towards the end of the year.
It hasn’t been an ideal start to 2022 for Rublev. He was among a litany of players who got infected with Covid at the Mubadala Exhibition in Abu Dhabi during the close season, and surprisingly, was allowed into Australia while still positive for the coronavirus.
The 24-year-old did not partake in any warm-up events so that he could quarantine and recover fully to play the Australia Open. He came through a couple of easy openers in Melbourne but met his match in the third round where he fell to an in-form Marin Cilic in four sets.

Laaksonen Scales Qualies To Reach Main Draw
Henri Laaksonen reached the main draw of the Rotterdam Open on his debut. The 29-year-old came through a pair of grueling three-setters to book his spot in Tuesday’s first-round meeting against Rublev.
Laaksonen took out a gallant Damir Dzumhur (who only last week reached the quarterfinals in Montpellier), before passing another test against Tim van Rijthoven.
The World No.85 has a decent record under the roof. Last year his only title on the Challenger Tour came on the indoor hard courts of Orleans.
His 2022 campaign started in Australia where he picked up his first and thus far only main draw win when he beat Benoit Paire. He is yet to defeat a Top 10 player in six previous attempts. Could he eradicate that record when he takes on the second seed Andrey Rublev?

Vengeance is not a word you would associate with someone like Rublev. But given his tumultuous start to the year, Rublev will have a point to prove in his title defense this week. Expect him to overpower Laaksonen.
