Elena Rybakina v Varvara Gracheva Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Rybakina, Looking to Resume where she Left

Elena Rybakina has had one of the best starts to the season on the circuit, having made it to the final in Adelaide 1. While the Kazakh ultimately fell to Ashleigh Barty, she did become the World No. 12 – her career-best singles ranking.

However, she picked up a thigh injury in Sydney and consequently, her form took a slight hit. She withdrew from her second-round bout against Caroline Garcia in the WTA 500 event while in the Australian Open, she retired against Shuai Zhang at the same stage.

That was two weeks ago and the 22-year-old will now hope to resume right where she left. Rybakina appears to be in good spirits and seems to have recovered from that injury. However, only time will tell how fit she truly is.

A runner-up here in 2020 and a quarterfinalist in 2018 (a feat she achieved as the then World No. 450), Rybakina is an exceptional player who is well-equipped to deliver a deep run in St. Petersburg.

Gracheva Breezes through Qualifiers

Local favourite Varvara Gracheva navigated the qualifiers successfully in the competition to reach the main draw. She won three of her matches in straight sets, overcoming the likes of Amina Anshba, Irina Bara, and Ana Bogdan.

But the real challenge for the 21-year-old will be to beat Rybakina. So far this season, Gracheva has lost her opening-round matches in Melbourne 2 and the Slam, respectively to Sorana Cirstea and Lucia Bronzetti.

Currently ranked World No. 81, the youngster has the ability to take on the big guns but unlike Rybakina, she lacks consistency. Last year, she was a semifinalist in WTA Chicago and made it to the third round in the US Open and French Open. Gracheva also featured in the later rounds in a couple of Challenger events.

Rybakina v Gracheva Prediction and Tip

If Rybakina is at her best – physically and mentally – this should end in a straight-set win for her. Otherwise, it may prove to be a slogfest. All things considered, she is a stronger player than Gracheva and should do well to reach round two.

Tip: Rybakina to win: 2/9 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
