Mackenzie McDonald v Alex de Minaur Head to Head

Can McDonald Get Beyond Second Round?

This is already the fifth tournament of the season for McDonald, and he has made the second round in all but one of them. The problem is that he has not yet been beyond that stage in 2022, something he would like to remedy in Rotterdam.

He made an encouraging start to his latest campaign on Monday, with a  straight sets win over the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, the number eight seed.

The American was the first to gain an advantage by breaking Basilashvili in the fourth game of the match. The Georgian hit back to level straight away, only to immediately drop his serve again.  Both men had further break opportunities, could not take them, and the first set belonged to McDonald.

The second set was more one-sided, with the American secure on his own serve – he only dropped three points on it in total – leaving him free to pressurise the Georgian. That paid off when he broke Basilashvili once, and then again for the second time.

From there he was able to close out the contest.

De Minaur Continues Goffin’s Miserable Run

Having missed Montpellier last week, de Minaur, who reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, is playing in his first tournament on European soil this week.

And he began his campaign with an impressive victory over David Goffin, now ranked 47 in the world, continuing the Belgian’s current miserable run.

The tone was set from the start, with Goffin dropping his opening service game. Another break consolidated the Australian’s position and, although Goffin saved three break points in his next service game, he could not prevent de Minaur claiming the first set to love.

There was brief encouragement early in the second set for the Belgian when, after a marathon third game which featured nine deuces, he broke the Australian’s  serve.

But all that hard work was thrown away when he dropped his own serve next game , and then meekly four games later.

De Minaur was able to serve out without any further alarms.

McDonald v De Minaur Prediction and Tip

De Minaur won their open previous meeting, and will start the clear favourite to do so again. If McDonald  wants to reach the third round of a tournament for the first time this year, he will need to raise his game.
