Opelka Battles Past Cedrik-Marcel Stebe

Second seed Reilly Opelka fired 28 aces and won two tiebreaks to see off German qualifier Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in the Round of 16 on Thursday.

The World No. 23, who was a semifinalist in Sydney last month, needed an hour and 52 minutes to eliminate the World No. 231, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (10-8). Neither player had a break point in the match and both served well with Opelka winning 76% service points and his opponent winning 74% of his.

With the victory, the 24-year-old American improved to 5-3 this year. Having started with a first round defeat in Melbourne, Opelka reached the semifinals in Sydney and the third round of the Australian Open.

Opelka is coming off an up-and-down 2021. While he reached a maiden ATP 1000 final in Canada, to finish runner-up to Daniil Medvedev, his only other significant performance was a semifinal finish in Rome.

A two-time champion on the tour, Opelka is chasing a third title in the U.S. Hie previous two came in New York in 2019 and Delray Beach in 2020.

Mannarino Hustles Past Nishioka

Fifth seed Adrian Mannarino eased into the last eight with a straight sets win over Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka.

The Frenchman served 13 aces and converted four of eight break points to oust the World No. 108, 6-3, 6-1. The 66-minute win was a much easier one for Mannarino than his first round victory over America’s Steve Johnson, against whom the Frenchman had to fight back from a set down to win in two hours and 27 minutes.

Ranked No. 57th in the world, Mannarino is into a second straight quarterfinal. He was also in the last eight in Montpellier last week, which followed a run to the fourth round of the Australian Open.

The 33-year-old, who had an ordinary 14-26 season last year, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) in the opening round. Against Nishioka, he never looked in trouble, getting a break in the first set and three breaks in the second to continue his march forward in the tournament.
