Isner Back In His Elements

A day after battling past Kevin Anderson in a two-hour-and-30-minute match on Thursday, third seed John Isner needed just 65 minutes to dispatch Canada’s Vasek Pospisil in the quarterfinal on Thursday.

Striking 19 aces in the match, Isner got 81% of his first serves in and won 90% of those points. He saved the only break point that he faced in the match and converted 50% of the four that he held.

The 36-year-old didn’t start the year well, coming into the tournament with a 1-4 record, with his only win coming against the much lower ranked Brayden Schnur in the ATP Cup. Since then he lost the other two matches at the ATP Cup and lost in his first match in Adelaide and the Australian Open.

The streak of four consecutive losses ended Thursday, with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-5) win over Anderson and he played even better in the quarterfinal, hustling past the World No. 150.

A 16-time champion at the tour-level, Isner is aiming to reach a 30th final. His last title came in Atlanta last year, while his last semifinal appearance was at the Toronto Masters last year.
