Ilya Ivashka has fond memories of Marseille. The indoor hard court tournament on these shores proved to be a catalyst in his ascent in the ATP tour.
Ivashka reached the semifinals as a qualifier back in 2018, although he hasn’t been able to replicate those exploits in his last two trips to the same city.
But Ivashka arrives in southern France as a top-tier player in 2022. Having already filled his trophy cabinet with an ATP title from Winston-Salem, Ivashka has established himself as a Top 50 player.
On Monday, the powerful Belarusian toppled Slovakia’s Norbert Gombos in straight sets to reach the second round. He reacted superbly from going down a break in the first set, breaking almost immediately. And in a close tiebreaker, one point would eventually decide matters, and it was Ivashka who held his nerve.
In the second set, Ivashka stepped up his game particularly on serve where he was hardly profligate. He broke his Slovakian opponent once when it mattered and held to love in his final game to round off a 7-6 6-4 win.

Travalgia Escapes Laaksonen In Thriller
Stefano Travaglia escaped the shackles of Henri Laaksonen in a thrilling opener at the Marseille Open. In one of the longest matches on day one, Travaglia saved a match point to win 6-2 6-7 7-6 in almost two and half hours to reach the second round.
Travaglia rode his luck a few times in the match not least when his opponent served for the match in the third set at 5-4. But the Italian sent a message of intent straightaway and it appeared Laaksonen lost the mental battle.
Travaglia had begun the match brightly, winning the first set in half an hour and dropping just one point behind his first serve. But his level dipped in the decisive moments of the second set, allowing Laaksonen a route back into the contest.
And in the third set, the Italian World No. 119 did save a match point on Laaksonen’s serve forcing another tiebreak. But this time it went his way. Overall, Travaglia fired 13 aces and won 81% first-serve points.

Ivashka can be extremely dominant under the roof due to his big serve. The World No. 49 has seen very little tennis this year due to injury, but he hasn’t shown any vulnerabilities from a physical standpoint.
