Nikoloz Basilashvili delivered a real statement of intent with his three-set win over Marton Fucsovics on Thursday. The Georgian is looking to get his season back on track after a handful of tepid performances to start the year.
But Basilashvili seems to have retained his interest to win his second title at the Qatar Open with a pair of wins against the odds. He had lost five matches on the spin in 2022 and faced the prospect of cascading down the rankings with another early exit in Doha.
Basilashvili took time before he could outsmart Fucsovics. He fell behind 6-3 but did not shrink. He was on the offense and always looked to give Fucsovics a lot more to work on his returns. That strategy would yield instant reward as he broke the Hungarian for the first time in the match for a 4-2 lead. He would eventually consolidate to force a decider.
In the third set, momentum swung from one player to the other, but it was the reigning champion who held his nerve in the crucial moments to pick up the win.

Rinderknech Stuns Shapovalov
Arthur Rinderknech produced the biggest upset of the week at the Qatar Open after knocking off the top seed Denis Shapovalov in straight sets.
Rinderknech scored his third top 20 win in the process, and possibly the most satisfying of the lot as he reached another tour-level semifinal in 2022.
The big-serving Frenchman gave Shapovalov a taste of his own medicine at times, breaking the Canadian twice and serving so well throughout the one-hour and 21-minute contest.
Rinderknech fashioned as many as 10 break points as Shapovalov had a nightmare serving day. The top seed coughed up nine double faults and was largely second best in baseline rallies. For the World No. 61, this has been a fantastic return to action after retiring hurt at the Australian Open.
