Veronika Kudermetova continues to impress in Dubai as she is now set to compete in her second semifinal of the season. Her most recent opponent was the lucky loser Jil Teichmann, whose run she ended with 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in under two and a half hours.
In all of her previous stints here, the Russian had never made it past the second round. But this year she overcame all odds in a rather remarkable fashion.
In the opening rounds, the 24-year-old knocked out the Grand Slam winners, former world number ones Victoria Azarenka and Garbine Muguruza. Kudermetova effectively cleared the playing field and seems to be all set for the final.
So far in 2022, the world number 31 has reached the final in Melbourne 250, and the third round in the Australian Open. She also participated in her home tournament in St. Petersburg last week but succumbed to Belinda Bencic.

Vondrousova Ends Yastremska’s Run
2019 French Open runner-up Marketa Vondrousova may not have won a singles title since 2017 but that drought is likely to end this season.
The Czech has been building her form gradually and it now seems that she is ready for the resurgence. Here is Dubai, she started as a qualifier and after reaching the main draw, has enjoyed a path of pretty much least resistance.
Luck may have also favoured Vondrousova as she got a walkover against Danielle Collins in the opening round, despite trailing 6-2 in the first set. After that, the 22-year-old had to overcome the Russian qualifier Varvara Gracheva and Dayana Yastremska, both in straight sets.
That said, she has had to play the most tennis among the four semifinalists in Dubai, amounting to over nine hours in six matches.
Vondrousova will compete in her fourth semifinal since September last season. In her last three attempts, she couldn’t muster enough grit to go the distance. The last time she reached the final in an event was in the Tokyo Olympics, where she had to settle for the silver medal.
Kudermetova v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip
Kudermetova has consistency on her side while Vondrousova has got quite a bit of momentum. This match can pretty much swing either way but the Russian will start as the odds-on favourite owing to her overall form this season.
However, the smart move here would be to wager on how long this match can go for.
