Jelena Ostapenko v Veronika Kudermetova Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Ostapenko Outperforms Halep

In what has been a memorable campaign for the number one ranked Latvian on the WTA Tour, Jelena Ostapenko carved yet another upset – this time by knocking out Simona Halep. The match was reminiscent of her 2017 French Open victory over the former world number one.

She won the match from a set down – for the third time this week with 2-6, 7-6(0), 6-0. Ostapenko committed 49 unforced errors to Halep’s 17 but ultimately, she managed to outmaneuver the Romanian. Halep had no answer to Ostapenko’s superior play in the final set; the latter was just superior in every regard as she struck fierce winners from all directions.

The world number 21 has now defeated four Grand Slam champions in a row in the ongoing Dubai Tennis Championships. She knocked out Sofia Kenin in the opener and followed it with three-setters over Iga Swiatek and Petra Kvitova.

Last week, Ostapenko was a semifinalist in St. Petersburg and now, a finalist here. She continues her resurgence in great style – something that began in Eastbourne last season.

The 24-year-old won her first trophy in almost two years and ended the season with a runner-up feat in Luxembourg and a place in the final four in Indian Wells.

Kudermetova Benefits from a Walkover

Veronika Kudermetova was slated to play Marketa Vondrousova in the semifinal, but the Czech withdrew with a right adductor injury. The Russian got a walkover into the final and will feature in her second such match of the season.

Coincidentally, the 24-year-old reached the final in Melbourne 1 in a similar fashion. Kudermetova was to meet Naomi Osaka in the semis but the Japanese withdrew from that match.

Between then and now, the world number 31 has lost to Maria Sakkari in the third round of the Australian Open and to Belinda Bencic in the St. Petersburg opener.

Like Ostapenko, Kudermetova also had a decent spell in 2021 as she won the title in Charleston and settled for the runner-up trophy in Abu Dhabi. As a doubles player, she reached the final in Wimbledon, Indian Wells, and Istanbul.

She is also scheduled for the doubles final in Dubai on Saturday with Elise Mertens.

Ostapenko v Kudermetova Prediction and Tip

While Kudermetova has the skills needed to challenge Ostapenko, it is hard to imagine her winning this one. The Latvian has been on fire and has absolutely surpassed her competition in every regard.

That said, the Russian did beat the likes of Victoria Azarenka and Garbine Muguruza in the early rounds so she has some pedigree to build upon. But on paper, Ostapenko seems to be superior and will fancy her chances of going the distance.
