Tenth seed Elina Svitolina will be making her eighth appearance in Doha. It’s not been a happy hunting tournament for the Ukrainian, who has reached the semifinals just once in 2019 and was a quarterfinalist last year.
Ranked No. 15, Svitolina has seen a dip in form and ranking over the last one year and she hasn’t been in good form this year either. The 27-year-old comes to Doha with a 3-4 record in 2022.
Svitolina began the season with back-to-back first-round defeats in both the Adelaide tournaments, before defeating two Frenchwomen Fiona Ferro and Harmony Tan in the first two rounds of the Australian Open. But the two-time Grand Slam semifinalist was stopped in the third round of the first major by Victoria Azarenka.
In Dubai this week, the two-time Dubai champion started with a straight sets win over Mayar Sharif, but was knocked out by Jil Teichmann in the round of 16.

It’s Been an Up-and-Down Season for Martincova So Far
World No. 40 Tereza Martincova is coming off a solid 2021 season. The 26-20 season saw the Czech reach her maiden final in Prague and also make massive gains in the rankings.
The 27-year-old is 4-5 this year. She lost in the opening round in her season opener in Melbourne and then won one and lost one in Adelaide 2 and the Australian Open.
Most recently, she featured at the St Petersburg Open, where she defeated Vera Zvonareva in the opening round and then got a walkover against Elena Rybakina in the Round of 16. Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu stopped her from reaching the semifinals.
In Doha, Martincova will be featuring for a second time. In her only main draw appearance in 2020, she won her first round match but fell in the second round.
