Schwartzman Returns To Another Final

A runner-up in Buenos Aires last week, Diego Schwartzman reached a consecutive final as he ousted compatriot Francisco Cerundolo in the semifinals of the Rio Open on Saturday. Last week, the World No. 14 had missed out on a title at home after suffering a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 defeat to Casper Ruud in the final.

Schwartzman had a tough start to the semifinal, as he was broken in the third game and then somehow held serve in a seven-deuce seventh game, in which he saved five break points. There was more trouble for the third seed as he faced a set point while serving at 3-5. But Schwartzman saved it and kept the set alive. He then saved two more set points on Cerundolo’s serve in the next game and eventually got the break to draw level.

The momentum turned from that point on and Schwartzman went on to take the first set in the tiebreak. The second set saw both players exchange a break in the first six games. Schwartzman got his nose in front with another break in the seventh and then he ended the match with a third break of the set to complete a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory in two hours.

Schwartzman had an even tougher quarterfinal win over Spain’s Pablo Andujar earlier. The three-hour-and-34-minute contest finished with the Argentine outlasting the Spaniard 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-4. Schwartzman saved 12 of 19 break points and converted seven of 14 during a contest which had drama right till the end.

Schwartzman’s easiest match in Rio this year was a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Pedro Martinez in the Round of 16.

With the semifinal win, Schwartzman improved his 2022 record to 11-4, which also includes a semifinal finish in Cordoba and a final at the Argentina Open last week. On Sunday, he will be looking to capture the Rio crown for a second time, having also won the title in 2018.

Alcaraz Knocks Out Two Italians in One Day

With rain playing spoilsport on Friday, Carlos Alcaraz had to deal with two top Italian players on one day to reach a second ATP tour final.

The World No. 29, who suffered a tough five set loss to Matteo Berrettini in the third round of the Australian Open, got his revenge over the Italian in the quarterfinals on Saturday, as he ousted the top seed 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

Hours later, the Spaniard knocked out Fabio Fognini in straight sets for a place in the final. Alcaraz broke Fognini twice in the first set, but found himself a break down after four games in the second. He clawed his way back in the set by winning three consecutive games and drawing level at 4-4 and then broke again later before ending the World No. 38’s run with a 6-2, 7-5 win in an hour and 46 minutes.

Playing just his second tournament of the year, the 2021 Umag Open champion had rallied to beat compatriot Jaume Munar 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round. He needed just two sets to dispatch Argentina’s Federico Delbonis 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) in the Round of 16, before needing two hours to beat Berrettini.
