It had begun as a solid season for Murray but things seem to have gone a tad haywire for the Briton in recent times.
After having narrowly missed winning a title in more than two years when he reached the final at Sydney – where he lost to Aslan Karatsev – Murray has lost in the second round at each of the following three tournaments he’s played.
While by itself it isn’t that bad a result, Murray would be particularly surprised by the manner in which he fell apart in his Doha Open encounter against Roberto Bautista-Agut where he lost in stunning fashion.
The former world number one managed to win just one game in the entire encounter, falling 6-0, 6-1 to crash out of the tournament and he would now look to overcome the mental scars from that defeat going into this tournament.
O’Connell might not prove the strongest opposition but a clinical performance is what Murray will need here.

O’Connell Makes it Through the Qualifiers
In three of the four tournaments O’Connell has played this season, he has crashed out in the first round.
In that fourth, at Australian Open, O’Connell managed to make it to the third round at the expense of Hugo Gaston and Diegl Schwartzman, thereby salvaging some of his showing.
And here in Dubai, the Aussie has won a couple of qualifying rounds to make the main. He had gone into both of them as a favourite, against Henri Laaksonen and Yuki Bhambri and won both with ease and in straight sets.
O’Connell will face a solid challenge now but from a player who is himself looking to discover his best touch. Can the world number 148 get past his British opponent?
