Elise Mertens v Petra Kvitova Head to Head
There has just been one previous encounter between these two players and that was held in Cincinnati in 2018. Kvitova had won that quarterfinal in three, gruelling sets.

After an early exit at Sydney at the start of the season, Mertens did seem to have resurrected things by reaching the fourth round at Australian Open. There, she fell to Danielle Collins in a stiff three-setter.
This was, however, followed by a quarterfinal exit at St. Petersburg Open, albeit to the much-favoured Maria Sakkari and a shock first round loss in Dubai last week. That came at the hands of Jil Teichmann in straight sets despite coming into the encounter at 2/5 favourite.
Her opener here at Doha, was against the 44th-ranked Jasmine Paolini and despite going into the match at 1/5 odds to win it, it look the Belgian player three sets again to come through.
The good news was Mertens obviously broke the two-match losing streak but her wayward tennis makes it tough for her given the pedigree of her opponent in this one.

Kvitova Routs Begu
It was just the kind of start that Kvitova needed in this tournament coming into it as a defending champion, a two-time winner and a finalist on three successive occasions.
She defeated Irina Camelia-Begu 6-3, 6-1 in her opening round match, in a mere 56 minutes to claim the second round spot. Breaking Begu five times in the match, the only time Kvitova faced trouble was when she was broken to love in the fifth game of the opening set but by then she had already raced away to a 4-0 lead.
Soon, Kvitova served out the set to love and then broke her opponent three more times to clinch the victory.
This is close on the heels of a quarterfinal appearance in Dubai but nothing too much else to write home about.

This could end up being a close match that lasts three sets with either player scooping it up depending on their form in the final set.
