Tommy Paul v Dusan Lajovic Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, at Indian Wells last October, Paul winning easily in straight sets.

Paul Benefits from Berrettini’s Misfortune

Paul, looking to build on winning his first ATP event of his career at the end of last season in Stockholm, has made an encouraging start to the season, having already reached two quarter-finals in Adelaide last month. And then, last week in Delray Beach, he went one better, losing at the semi-final stage to the eventual winner Cameron Norrie.

However, he seemed to be up against it in his first round match against Matteo Berrettini, the world number six, and the number five seed in Acapulco.

The Italian was on top in the first set, winning 14 out of 17 points on his first serve, saving the one break point he faced, and forcing the only break to take the first set.

But then he suffered an injury that seriously impeded his movements. Paul took full advantage and was already two breaks up when the Italian decided he could not continue, threw in the towel, and retired hurt after conceding the match,

Lajovic Battles into Second Round

Lajovic has not been in the best of form so far in 2022, having lost all three matches playing in the ATP Cup for Serbia, and then losing in the second round in Sydney, and at the Australian Open.

The switch to South American clay did not go any better – he was defeated in the second round in Buenos Aires, and in the first round of Rio.

However, he made a  winning start to his campaign in Acapulco with a fighting display against the American, Sebastian Korda, the world number 40.

The match began with a  flurry of dropped serves, after which sequence Lajovic found himself two breaks up. Break points came and went for each man, and Korda recovered one of the breaks, but not the other, and the Serb was one set to the good.

The unforced errors continued into the second set. Both men dropped their serves early, but, having saved six break points, Korda broke Lajovic to move ahead.

The Serb hit back to level, but, the very next game, he dropped his serve again, and the match was all-square.

The Serb flirted with disaster in the third set, and he twice found himself a  break down before he was able to pull back the deficit each time.

And then he broke Korda to love, and served out next game.

Paul v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

Paul won their only previous match, and should benefit from his stroke of good fortune against Berrettini to progress.
