Alize Cornet is 1-2 at her home tournament in Lyon and she will seek to improve on that record this week as the fourth seed.
Cornet has worked her way back to become France’s top-ranked female player again after a superb start to the season in Australia.
The wily Frenchwoman reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open last month, scoring mammoth wins over the likes of Garbine Muguruza and Simona Halep before losing to Danielle Collins – the eventual runner-up.
That improbable run in Melbourne steered Cornet into the Top 50 for the first time since 2019. It is a welcome return considering just a few weeks before the tournament she had cast doubt on her tennis future beyond this season.
Cornet admitted that she is playing for the consecutive Grand Slam appearance record which stands at 62 – two less than hers. In all likelihood, she will break it before the year-end. But the 32-year-old will be keen to impress on home soil even at a low-key event. She last won a WTA title in 2018 – a drought worth halting.

Busca Breezes Past Maria To Reach Main Draw
Cristina Busca needed just 63 minutes to beat Germany’s Tatjana Maria 6-3 6-2 to reach the main draw. Two years ago, she had fallen in the qualifying rounds but made sure there would be no such recurrence this time.
Busca was a major underdog in Sunday’s qualifying match against Maria. The veteran German had won 11 of her past 12 matches on indoor hard courts – a run that saw clinch the Rome ITF as well as reaching the semifinals in at the Grenoble ITF.
But Maria ran out of gas after accumulating a shedload of matches in February. Busca reaped the rewards as she took advantage of the World No. 212’s serve that completely malfunctioned. Maria won a paltry 56% first-serve points and just 39% behind her second serve.
The Spaniard fashioned eight break points and converted five times as Maria struggled to cope with the intensity.
Cornet v Busca Prediction and Tip
Busca scored a fine win over an in-form player on Sunday. But it was clear Tatjana Maria had little left in the tank to compete after playing such a busy schedule in recent weeks. I expect a rested Cornet to lay down a marker in front of her home support in the first round.
