Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia has won five matches this season, but just one of them came in the main draws, that victory was a come-from-behind three-set win over the United States’ Katie Volynets in the first round of the Australian Open.

It was a third time that Haddad Maia had won a match at the Australian Open and fifth time at any Grand Slam tournament. She has however, never gone past the second round, and this year was beaten by Simona Halep in the second round at the Australian Open.

Haddad Maia’s other four wins this season came in the qualifying rounds of the Sydney International and the Qatar Open. But the Brazilian was beaten in the first round in Sydney by Belinda Bencic and in the opening round in Qatar by Amanda Anisimova.

A finalist at the Korea Open in 2017, the 25-year-old has shown at the lower level that she can perform on both hard and clay surfaces.

While she hasn’t yet found her feet in singles at the tour-level, she has already featured in two finals in doubles this year and this includes a first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open. Haddad Maia along with partner Anna Danilina finished runner-up to the Czech pairing of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova. Haddad Maia and Danilina, however won the doubles title at the Sydney International.

This is her second appearance in Monterrey and the Brazilian is yet to win a first round match in the tournament.
