Shuai Zhang v Vitalia Diatchenko Head to Head

It’s 2-2 from their previous four meetings across levels. Last year, they met twice. While Zhang won the Round of 32 match in Birmingham, Diatchenko avenged the defat in the WTA 125 Angers final in December.

Zhang Eases Past Rus

China’s Shuai Zhang reached the quarterfinals of a WTA tournament for the first time this year as she defeated the Netherlands’ Arantxa Rus 6-4, 6-4 in a one-hour-and-35-minute second round contest at the Lyon Open on Thursday.

The eighth seed, who got a break in each set, held as many as 10 break points in the match. In contrast, her opponent had just one opportunity to break, which she could not take.

This is the World No. 64’s first tour-level quarterfinal since falling in the last eight of the Cleveland Open in August. She did reach a final of a WTA 125K event in December, finishing runner-up in Angers, France.

The 33-year-old, who came into the tournament with a 2-5 record in the main draws in 2022, had begun the tournament with a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 victory over France’s Kristina Mladenovic in the first round.

The 2021 U.S. Open doubles champion will be happy to have got a few wins early in the season. Last year, she had won just one of her first 10 matches, before reaching a fourth tour-level final in Nottingham. However, she couldn’t add to her two WTA titles falling in the title clash to Johanna Konta.

Diatchenko Upsets Golubic

For a second consecutive day, Vitalia Diatchenko dug deep to carve out back-to-back three-set wins to reach the quarterfinals in Lyon.

After knocking out Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam in the first round, Diatchenko needed two hours and 52 minutes to oust Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4 on Thursday.

Diatchenko double faulted 11 times in the match, but struck five aces and won 105 of 206 points in the match. Both players broke each other nine times in the match, but it was Diatchenko’s dominance in the first set tiebreak and in the third set that ended the third seed’s run in the tournament.

The second set was a strange one. Golubic held serve to win the first game but that was followed by nine consecutive breaks of serve, with the Swiss sending the match to the third set.

Ranked No. 118, Diatchenko had not won a match at any level this year, bringing a 0-4 record from all levels to the tournament. She scored an equally tough first round win, defeating Friedsam 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in two hours and 12 minutes.

Zhang v Diatchenko Prediction and Tip

This will be a close contest. Diatchenko outplayed Zhang 6-0, 6-4 to win the Angers title in December. Although Zhang is the seeded player she won’t take her opponent lightly. Expect Zhang to get her revenge on Friday and advance to the semifinals.
