Sorana-Mihaela Cirstea v Anna Bondar Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in Bondar’s home event in Budapest three years ago, Cirstea winning in three sets.

Cirstea Cruises Through to Last Eight

Cirstea has reached her first quarter-final of the year, without seriously being tested so far in Lyon, having faced two qualifiers to date.

She began by playing Mariam Bolkvadze of Georgia, and, although the world number 156 began the match by breaking the Cirstea serve, it was downhill for her from then onwards.

The Romanian broke back straight away, then broke again to secure the first set, and ran away with the second.

Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland, the world number 144, put up a stiffer challenge, particularly after dropping the first set.

Three times she broke the Romanian’s serve in the second set, only to immediately drop her own serve again on each occasion.

And, serving to stay in the match, Voegele was broken again.

Maiden WTA Quarter-Final for Bondar

This is the first time that Bondar has appeared in the quarter-final of a WTA senior event, although she did enjoy a fair degree of success last year on the junior tours.

She was made to fight for her place in the second round, though, by the Japanese qualifier, Yuriko Lily Miyazaki, the world 206, who took the first set of their match on a  tie-break, and led by a break, and was within three points of victory in the third set, before Bondar’s greater experience at this level told, and the Hungarian fought back to win.

That earned her a second round match with another qualifier, Katie Boulter of Great Britain, the world number 136.

Two breaks of serve gave Bondar the first set, but, towards the end of it, Boulter, who has had her fair share of injury problems in the past, was struggling.

At the changeover at the end of the fist set she decided she could not continue, and Bondar was into the next round.

Cirstea v Bondar Prediction and Tip

Bondar will enjoy the experience of playing in her first quarter-final at this level, but it will not be a novelty for Cirstea, and her all-round game should be too strong for the Hungarian.
