It’s 1-1 from their previous meetings. Garcia won at the Fed Cup in 2019, while Van Uytvanck beat Garcia in the quarterfinals at Lyon in 2020.

Van Uytvanck Holds Off Gracheva

Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck got a second straight sets win at the Lyon Open on Wednesday to reach a first quarterfinal of the season. The 2021 Astana Open champion last reached the quarterfinals of a tour-level tournament in Linz in November.

Having beaten Vera Zvonareva 6-0, 6-3 in the first round, the seventh seed defeated Varvara Gracheva 6-2, 6-4 in the second round to record consecutive wins for the first time this season.

In both the matches, the World No. 55 had a dominant start, but had to fight for victory in the second set. More so against Gracheva in the second round, when the Belgian needed 55 minutes to win the second set.

Van Uytvanck broke Gracheva twice in the first set to win it in no time. She also had a bright start in the second, racing to a 3-0 lead, with a double break. Gracheva pulled one back though, only to see the seventh seed restore the two-break advantage in the next game. Refusing to surrender, the World no. 71 won the next three games in a row to draw level at 4-4. The Belgian regrouped and broke again, converting a sixth break point in a six-deuce ninth game. She eventually served out the match in the next game.

The 27-year-old will be looking to reach a second semifinal in Lyon. She had reached that far in her only other appearance in 2020.

Garcia Edged Past Trevisan

Local hope Caroline Garcia will be featuring in a second quarterfinal of the season as she edged past Italy’s Martina Trevisan in the second round on Thursday.

Garcia had a slow start with Trevisan winning the first three games, but the Frenchwoman got better with the set, winning the next five and eventually closing out the first set.

The second set was dominated by Trevisan from start to finish as she broke Garcia three times, while getting broken just once. In the third, both players held serve for the first six games, but Garcia then picked up pace and closed out the match by winning four consecutive games. The two-hour-and-five minute match ended with the World no. 74 winning 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

Garcia had also needed more than two hours to defeat top seed Camila Giorgi in the first round. The 28-year-old was edged out by the Italian in the first set, but she made a resounding comeback demolishing the World No. 29 in the next two for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 win.

With the win the seven-time tour-level champion improved to 4-5 for the season. She was a quarterfinalist in Sydney, after getting a walkover against Elena Rybakina in the Round of 16. Garcia didn’t get much success in other tournaments but she will be hoping to reach her first semifinal, since her run to the final four in Lausanne last year.
