Jasmine Paolini v Dayana Yastremska Head to Head

Paolini is 3-0 against the Ukrainian, with all three of those wins coming last year.

Paolini Powers Past Korpatsch

Fifth seed Jasmine Paolini of Italy needed just 59 minutes to dispatch Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch in the Round of 16 on Thursday.

The Italian, who saved all three of the break points that she faced in the match, broke her opponent twice in the first and twice in the second to score a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory.

The World no. 48 won 75% first serve points in the entire match and dropped just three points on her serve in a dominant second set. With the win, the Italian improved to 4-4 in the main draws this year. She had won one and lost one in her Australian Open warm up events in Melbourne and Adelaide, but made first round exits from the Australian Open and the Qatar Open.

The 26-year-old fought back from a set down to win her first round match against Romania’s Irina Bara. After a two-hour-and-27-minute contest, Paolini beat the Romanian 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

On Friday, the 2021 Slovenia Open champion will be looking to reach her first semifinal since the Courmayeur Open in October, when she defeated Yastremska in the quarterfinal.

Yastremska Breezes Past Bucșa

World No. 140 Dayana Yastremska knocked out Spain’s Cristina Bucșa in straight sets on Thursday to enter the last eight in Lyon.

Yastremska converted five of nine break points and saved half of the four that she faced in the match to beat the World No. 139, 6-2, 6-3.

The 21-year-old Ukrainian had on Tuesday eked out a solid come-from-behind win over Romania’s Ana Bogdan. Yastremska saved a match point in the second set and another in the third to beat the World No. 97, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (9-7) in three hours and nine minutes.

This is the second tournament this season when the Ukrainian has reached the quarterfinals. She had earlier reached the last eight in Dubai, defeating Barbora Krejčíková en route.

A three-time tour-level champion, Yastremska last reached a semifinal in Hamburg last July. Can she return to another WTA final four?
