Caroline Garcia v Shuai Zhang Head to Head

The tally stands at 1-1 although, their last match took place in the 2019 Wimbledon. Zhang won that game in straight sets; Garcia’s last win over the Chinese came back in 2014.

Garcia Finds her Rhythm at Home

Local favourite Caroline Garcia has reached her maiden semifinal of 2022 in Lyon – her first such run since reaching the final four in Lausanne last July.

The former world number four has won all of her matches in three sets, starting with Camila Giorgi in the opener. She followed that with victories over Martina Trevisan and Alison Van Uytvanck in the subsequent rounds. Garcia relied on her superior pedigree and experience to deliver this turnaround, winning on average 70% of the points behind the first service.

Her other results this season have been largely underwhelming. That said, there is some sign of optimism. Keeping aside the early exits in Melbourne 2 and the Australian Open, the 28-year-old did beat Simona Halep in Doha and Jessica Pegula in Sydney.

Currently ranked World No. 74, Garcia’s form took a sharp hit last season as she now looks to reclaim her former glory.

Zhang, Enjoying an Easy Run

World No. 64 Shuai Zhang has had an effortless campaign in Lyon. Yet to drop a set, she first dispatched Kristina Mladenovic 7-6(3), 7-5 and followed it with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Arantxa Rus.

In the quarterfinal, she was slated to play Vitalia Diatchenko but got a walkover into the semis after the Russian withdrew in the first set trailing 0-3.

Zhang’s ongoing season has been quite similar to Garcia’s, seeing that it is marked with many early-round defeats. She did, however, reach the third round in the Australian Open after upsetting Viktorija Golubic and Elena Rybakina en route.

The 33-year-old Chinese had a comparatively better season last year – she won three doubles titles – including the US Open and Cincinnati Open, and was a runner-up in the Nottingham Open and Angers Challenger.

Garcia v Zhang Prediction and Tip

Garcia has got the ability to go the distance, it all comes down to how she fares on Saturday. The fact that Zhang hasn’t had the most consistent spell herself gives her all the more reason to be positive of her chances.

It wouldn’t be surprising if this goes to three sets but Garcia, given her home advantage and overall singles pedigree, should come out on the top.
