Not a lot of people may have heard of the 17-year-old American, world number 542 Ashlyn Krueger. However, keeping in mind her recent form and ascension on the WTA Tour, that may change rather soon.
Around the same time last season, Krueger made her tour debut in Guadalajara as a qualifier – ranking somewhere in the mid 900s. Since then, she has kept herself focussed on the ITF circuit in a bid to build her form and gain some experience.
While she hasn’t delivered any substantial results yet, there is cause to be optimistic that she can surprise. She won the Junior Grand Slam doubles at the Flushing Meadows last season.
Krueger started as a qualifier in the BNP Paribas Open (her first WTA event of the year), upsetting Panna Udvardy and former world number 24 Christina McHale to reach the main draw.

Putintseva, Struggling with Form
27-year-old Yulia Putintseva hasn’t had the best of the starts to the 2022 season although, she has played in only three tournaments so far.
In the Australian Open, the Kazakh was stunned by Harmony Tan in round one while in Dubai, she fell in the final qualifying round to Marketa Vondrousova. Her last stint was in Doha where she lost to Victoria Azarenka in the first round.
Such wasn’t the case for Putintseva last season when she won the Budapest Grand Prix and reached the final in Astana Open. The current world number 47 also reached the third round in Indian Wells in October, defeating Andrea Petkovic and Elena Rybakina.
Putintseva v Krueger Prediction and Tip
Compared to Krueger, Putintseva is scoring ahead in terms of form, experience, and trophies. As a three-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist, she shouldn’t face any major difficulties in making quick work of the American and make it to the second round.
