Karolina Pliskova v Danka Kovinic Head to Head

Karolina Pliskova and Danka Kovinic never played against one another.

Pliskova’s Return to Tennis

Karolina Pliskova last played in November last year when she announced that she has an injury. Since then it’s been a slow return for the Czech player who will play her first matches in Indian Wells. It’s an event where she had some success historically albeit her last outings here have not been impressive.

It’s hard to say what one can expect from Pliskova especially after not playing for 5 months but she will most likely be very content if she can pull out a win. Kovinic is no pushover and she will certainly fancy her chances against a rusty Pliskova who tends to go on error sprees at times.

For Pliskova this will be a match where she will finally be able to assess her true conditions in terms of injury and overall physicality before she can find any form. With clay coming up in a month, Pliskova will use this stretch to play herself into form. A win would be a good start.

Kovinic Rising Up

Danka Kovinic played a superb match in Melbourne to take down Emma Raducanu in three sets and it was a match that showed the Montenegrin player is ready to take the next step. It’s not been working out as a great since that match with a 5-5 record on the year looking okay at best.

Kovinic plays her best tennis on clay and generally slower surfaces as it allows her to set up her baseline game which can be hard to counter. On fast courts, she doesn’t have the time needed to properly set up and adjusting was never a strong suit, to begin with.

How well Indian Wells suits her showed the first-round showdown against Teichmann. Kovinic was able to win that one comfortably 7-5 7-5 and she will be a very tough opponent for Pliskova after her long absence. Can she pull off another upset?

Pliskova v Kovinic Prediction and Tip

This match is one where logic tells you to clearly pick Kovinic. She has been playing tennis this season and while not playing for a while before Indian Wells she showed a rather good level in round 1. Pliskova has not played in 5 months and even the best of these need time to fully get back into things.

I don’t expect the Czech player to show something extraordinary however her game generally tends to do well in Indian Wells. If she plays okay she can definitely beat Kovinic. The Montenegrin never adjusted well and Pliskova might have enough aggression to make her uncomfortable.

Even so, I do expect Kovicni to pull through. The surface is rather slow, she will have time to set up her game and I do expect her to take this one. I just don’t think Pliskova will be able to shake off the rust so quickly, especially against an inspired opponent.

Tip: Kovinic to win in three sets: 4/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
