Last year was pretty good for Cori Gauff in terms of the big tournaments. Having never reached a quarterfinal in a major or a WTA 1000 event, Gauff made her last eight debut at the French Open and then reached the semifinals at the Italian Open and the quarterfinals in Dubai and Toronto.
The performance helped her make significant gains in the rankings and she seems to have carried that form to 2022. The 17-year-old brings a 7-5 record into the tournament and that includes a semifinal finish in Adelaide-2 and a quarterfinal finish in Qatar.
She also captured her first WTA 1000 doubles title in Qatar along with Jessica Pegula.
These are very early days for the American’s career, but she has already shown her ability to fight and dominate matches on all surfaces. She is also a two-time winner on the tour, the first of which came on the hard courts of Linz in 2019 and the second on clay at Emiglia Romagna last year.

Liu Eliminates Qualifier Tomova
Claire Liu moved into the second round with a straight sets win over Bulgarian qualifier Viktoriya Tomova.
Both players broke each other twice in the first set, but Liu raced to take the set in the tiebreak. The second set was equally tough as Tomova came from a break down twice to draw level at 4-4. But Liu broke a third time in the next game and then served out the match for a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 victory in an hour and 47 minutes.
This is only the third main draw appearance for the 21-year-old. Liu won one match in Melbourne but lost her opening round match at the Australian Open. She has struggled to come through the qualifiers since then.
Having started off with a win, Liu will be hoping to build on the star but faces a tough opponent in the next round.
