Belinda Bencic v Kaia Kanepi Head to Head

They played once before and it happened at Wimbledon in 2019. Bencic won that match with 6-3 6-1.

Losing Streak for Belinda Bencic

Belinda Bencic lost the last two matches she played and it’s a troubling trend from the Swiss player who returned to tennis prominence last year with a stunning Tokyo Olympics run. Bencic was looking to build upon a solid 2021 however the start of the year has been less than ideal.

5-4 on the year looks okay but her play has not been sensational. A good opportunity to change that presents itself in the Indian Wells event where Bencic played a semifinal before (2019). She did not play last year but she is quite familiar with the tennis ground and usually plays rather well.

The conditions suit her and she is able to grind out matches when she needs to. A win against a solid Kanepi would boost her confidence and considering the Estonian’s struggles with the event it’s a very good chance for Bencic.

Kanepi Keeps on Winning

Being a 35-year old veteran is not a problem for Kaia Kenpi who simply keeps on playing and keeps on winning. The Estonian has a 6-2 record on the year and while the majority of those wins came at the Australian Open she looked quite comfortable in the first round here.

Kanepi plays superb tennis on fast courts where she can unleash her devastating baseline game and generally her play on slower hard courts like this one has been a problem. She never advanced past the 2nd round here and with a matchup against Bencic, it’s looking unlikely again.

A first-round win over Robin Montgomery doesn’t fill me with much optimism for Kanepi who will struggle here. Not the best mover anymore, Kanepi will have to look to end rallies quickly against Bencic. She is capable of that but the Swiss player can certainly defend and keep herself in play.

Bencic v Kanepi Prediction and Tip

Their only match was played at Wimbledon and Bencic won that match. It’s been a few years since then and that does not tell us much. However, there are some things that might help us predict this one. First of all, it’s the history of the players at the event.

Bencic has played here rather well in the past while Kanepi has not. The Estonian can’t fully unleash her baseline game as the conditions allow players to return balls here that are usually winners elsewhere. Her difficulty moving at this stage of her career certainly won’t help her.

I also think Bencic reset rather well after a disappointing showing in Doha. She will cherish the chance to play here and win the match to move on to the next round.

Tip: Bencic to win in straight sets: 11/10 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
