It took Gaston through to his fifth tournament of the season to finally register his first main draw victory, a win that came in Marseille last month.
He followed it up with a defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas after which he hasn’t played another match before this tournament.
Three first round losses at Sydney, Australian Open and Montpellier were bad enough but none of them came to very high-ranked players. In the first, he went down to Lorenzo Sonego before crashing out to Christopher O’Connell and Soon-woo Kwon.
At Rotterdam, Gaston wouldn’t have even qualified for the main draw after he fell to a qualifying loss to Bernabe Zapata Miralles and even the entry as a lucky loser did not change his fortunes too much. He lost to Kwon again.
With this kind of rhythm to his play, Gaston would be worried going up against even a player ranked outside the top 200.

Wolf Has One Main Draw Win This Year
While Wolf has been tipped to be one of the talented players to watch out for in the future, his season hasn’t yet taken off. Once ranked 120th in the world, this Ohio resident has has just one main draw victory in 2022 on the ATP circuit and that’s something that would worry him.
The 23-year-old failed to qualify for the Australian Open, and then suffered the same fate in Dallas as well. At the Delray Beach Open, it became three tournaments in a row he had lost in the qualifiers and it wasn’t until he took to court in Acapulco that he finally managed a main draw slot.
Wolf went one better there, defeating Lorenzo Sonego in the first round before winning just one game in his second round loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Here, Wolf was the favourite in both of his qualifying rounds and won them in straight sets to qualify for the main draw. Can he now double his main draw win count for the season?
